New Ways of Collecting

Sandwell Museums Service is collaborating with West Bromwich based arts organisation Multistory. Together with artists Julian Walker and Katie Shipley they are exploring how they can re-capture the industrial past of the Black Country. They have set a creative challenge: to collect memories and emotions and to re-connect objects, people and places that have become separated from each other as the six towns of the borough moved away from being centres of heavy industry. Their overarching aim is to find new ways of collecting – to move on from the collection of the problematic and increasingly mute artefacts of the Black Country ’s industrial heritage to make a People’s Collection of feelings: pride, identity and self confidence.
